Alava boasts one of the richest and most varied set of natural resources on the Iberian Peninsula. Its varied landscapes offer a wide range of different environments.

Almost 48% of the total surface area of the province is wooded (the publicly-owned mountain areas of the province of Alava occupy 111,091 hectares and 32,414 are in private ownership).

Beech, oak, holm oak, ash and conifers cover the foothills of the Gorbea mountain and the deep valleys of Ayala and Aramaio in the north of the province, as well as its mountains to the south-east. The centre of Alava is dominated by a large plain called "La Llanada", on which cereals, potatoes and sugar beet are grown.
