Both administratively and politically, Alava comes within the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Vitoria-Gasteiz is the political-administrative capital of the Basque Country and is the headquarters of the Basque Parliament and Government.

For many years, Alava has enjoyed a political regime that has allowed it to make its own decisions to a large extent in subjects that affect the province directly.

Politically and legislatively, the province of Alava has the right to make its own decisions in several different fields such as Agriculture, Public Works and Social Welfare, among others, and has its own legislative body in the form of the General Councils.

Likewise, it should be pointed out that the Provincial Council of Alava has the authority to control and collect taxes in the province. This means that we have, on the one hand, an expeditious and efficient government with real decision-making capacity and, on the other, one that is easily accessible to taxpayers.
