The railway enjoys a long tradition in Alava.

Near Alava, Paris-Madrid-Lisbon railway line links up with trains coming from the Ebro valley and the Cantabrian coast.

This railway line is used mainly by cement, steel, horticultural and automobile manufacturers based on the Iberian Peninsula to export large amounts of goods to central Europe.

Soon, work will begin on the so-called "Basque Y" which will join the three capitals of the Basque Country (Vitoria, Bilbao and San Sebastian).
