Throughout the province, Alava offers an extensive network of services and infrastructures for leisure pursuits,
designed to enhance the quality of life and cultural enrichment of its inhabitants. Most of the towns and villages
in the province boast libraries, culture centres, sports centres, hostels, swimming-pools, frontons, bowling alleys,
football pitches and basketball courts, etc.
The vast majority of the inhabitants of this province live in the capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, where there are a large
number of civic centres located in several districts of the city. These centres organise a wide range of sports,
cultural and social activities. Both these civic centres and those located in the main population centres throughout
the province, as well as local government centres, offer information, counselling and administrative aid, if appropriate,
in matters relating to employment, social benefits and resources, care for the young and other needs of society.
With regard to sports, the sports complexes in Mendizorrotza and Gamarra, the "Estadio" sports club and the civic
centres provide both the inhabitants of Vitoria-Gasteiz and visitors with facilities for doing a large number of sports.
There is an extensive network of sports facilities in the rest of the province too: four golf courses (two of them public),
dozens of football pitches, tennis and basketball courts, equestrian centres, a large number of indoor and outdoor
swimming-pools scattered throughout the province, Basque "pelota" frontons, bowling alleys, water-skiing, wind-surf and
sailing on the reservoirs, installations for flying enthusiasts, fishing, hunting, routes for mountaineers and mountain
bikes, as well as areas for rock-climbing.
The wide variety of Basque rural sports (herri kirolak) are pursued throughout the province. Both in its towns and rural
areas, the province offers high-quality accommodation for tourists. Moreover, the coast is only an hour away by car from
Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Hotels, rural guest houses, restaurants in which one can try the local delicacies and the wineries of the Rioja Alavesa
ensure a pleasant and interesting stay.
