Alava boasts a rich diversity of natural landscapes.

To the east, in Valdegobía, the landscape is characterised by mountains and wide valleys. The Rioja Alavesa, known throughout Europe for its excellent wines, is located on the banks of the river Ebro, in the south.

With regard to fauna, the natural parks of Valderejo, Gorbeia, Urkiola and Izki contain a wide variety of species: Griffon vultures, roe deer, deer, wild boars and a large number of small mammals. Aquatic and migratory birds nest in splendid natural settings on the main Santa Engracia and Ullíbarri Gamboa reservoirs.

Alava invests in the conservation and improvement of its environment and pursues the ideal of "sustainable development" - development in harmony with the natural world. Environmental impact studies are also performed as a vehicle to protect and recover the environment.

Over recent years and thanks to careful legislation, each of the major road network construction schemes that have been carried out have dedicated a large part of their budgets to the maintenance of the natural heritage and environmental restoration.

From the urban planning point of view, several schemes are underway to restore the medieval quarters of several towns in the province, and to adapt the housing found in these to current requirements.

Today, Vitoria-Gasteiz has one of the highest number of square metres/inhabitant of parks and gardens in Europe. As a result of this careful urban planning, the city is an attractive and stress-free place to live.

Both in the capital and in neighbouring population centres and parks, there are bicycle paths - some of which have been laid on old railway tracks.
