Alava is fully integrated into the Atlantic Arc and is an obligatory passing place for North and South-bound traffic. At the same time it is the natural exit route for traffic from Northern Spain to the Mediterranean, via the Ebro Valley. Alava marks the place where these two routes cross, making it an ideal location to set up business.

The road network of Alava is one of the most highly developed and modern systems in Spain. Among its most major roadways we should mention the N-1 which joins Madrid and the French border and the A-68 motorway which connects Bilbao with Barcelona, with links to our provincial road network. Of special relevance is the AP1 Vitoria – Eibar motorway project, with a total of 46.2Km of motorway. The section under construction in Alava is expected to cost 120 million euros. Besides linking the European North-South axis with Spain, it will reduce travelling time between Eibar and Vitoria by 20 minutes, greatly facilitating communications between Alava and Guipúzcoa. Work on this motorway is expected to finish in 2007 and is due to open on January 1 2008.

The international itineraries defined in the European Agreement on main traffic routes also cross Alava (E-80 Lisbon-Pau, the E-05 Glasgow-Algeciras, E-804 Bilbao-Barcelona, AGR 1975 and Geneva 1985).

Alava's road network comprises a total of 1.408 km of roads, with 50 km of dual carriageway, 60 km of highway and is made up of major national and international roads.

The railway also occupies an important place in the transport system in Alava and consists of 156 km of track. The two most important lines are the Madrid-Irun (border with France) and the one that links Miranda de Ebro and Bilbao. Soon, work will begin on the so-called "Basque Y", which will join the three Basque capitals (Vitoria, Bilbao and San Sebastián), engineered for use by high-speed trains.

Vitoria airport is the fourth-largest cargo terminal in Spain and is in full expansion. During the year 2000, Foronda airport handled 35,600 tonnes of goods.

Likewise, Bilbao airport, which handled 2,525,763 passengers in the year 2000, is just 60 km away, as is the port of Bilbao joined by the A-68 motorway and by rail. It is one of the major European ports and represents our natural access to the sea.
