This is made up of modern and important national and international roadways.
One of the most important roadways is the north-south corridor which runs along the N-1 joining Madrid with the
French border and links up with the entire radial road network of the Peninsula. This dual carriageway forms part
of the E-05 European route and its most recently constructed section has been designed to allow for a possible
increase in traffic in the future.
The A-68 Bilbao-Barcelona motorway links the north of the peninsula with the Mediterranean coast via the Ebro
valley, and reduces the travelling time between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao to little more than half an hour.
The main international traffic routes defined in the European Agreement also cross Alava: the E-80 Lisbon-Pau,
the E-05 Glasgow-Algeciras and the E-804 Bilbao-Barcelona.
With regard to the local road network, there are access roads to all neighbouring provinces, the status and
routing of which are kept at optimum levels.
